03Cost per sqm

What a square meter of wall costs

Per-piece prices are hard to compare when the formats differ. A ₱60 tile looks cheap next to a ₱420 one until you count how many it takes to cover a square meter.

Count them and the stone comes out close to even. Most formats land at about ₱2,333 per sqm of wall, 15 x 30 cm at ₱2,444, and 10 x 20 cm at ₱3,000.

So pick a format for how the wall should look. Large formats still save on labour, since the mason sets fewer pieces and fills fewer joints.

What sits on top

Adhesive, grout, sealer, and labour are extra, and so is freight. Adobe is heavy, so freight is a real line item on long hauls.

Use the wall calculator above, or send your wall length and height and we'll work out quantities with you.

What adobe is

Philippine adobe is volcanic tuff from the Guadalupe Tuff Formation, the bedrock under much of Metro Manila. It formed from material thrown out by ancient eruptions.

Engineers who studied it for the Metro Manila Subway note that the formation is locally called adobe and runs from Quezon City south to Cavite. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau describes the quarried material as lithic lapilli tuff, commonly known as adobe.

Same word, different material

Elsewhere, adobe means a sun-dried mud brick. Here it means quarried volcanic tuff, and an archaeology paper on 19th-century Philippine building notes how far apart the two meanings are.

Many supplier pages still describe adobe as earth mixed with straw. That's the mud brick.

You've seen the real thing. It's in the walls of Intramuros and the ground floors of old bahay na bato.

05Uses

Where adobe goes: walls

Nearly all the adobe tile we see installed is on walls. It's a facing stone, and that's where it performs best.

Perimeter and garden walls.

Cladding over CHB turns a plain wall into stone at a moderate cost per sqm.

Facades and feature walls.

Interior and exterior. It pairs well with dark timber, black steel, and warm lighting.

Gate posts and entry walls.

Small runs seen up close, where the smaller formats are worth their place.

Planter faces and raised beds.

A stone face on a planter box or raised bed wall.

Walls behind water features.

With a breathable sealer and a plan for the moss that follows constant damp.

Resort and restaurant walls.

A local stone with a story guests can read on a placard.

06Choosing

Formats and how to pick one

Large: 30 x 60, 20 x 60, 10 x 60 cm.

Long runs and full facades. Fastest to lay, fewest joints. The 10 x 60 plank stacked horizontally gives long banding.

Mid: 30 x 30, 20 x 30, 15 x 30 cm.

Feature walls, gate posts, planter faces, and column wraps.

Small: 10 x 30, 10 x 20 cm.

Accent bands, stair risers, niches, and curved surfaces.

Formats cut from the same batch can be mixed on one wall, and the colour carries across.

07Floors

Can adobe go on floors?

Rarely, and with care. Adobe is soft and porous, and a 3/4 inch tile can crack under point loads.

Possible

Light garden paths and stepping areas

With a thicker cut on a full mortar bed, sealed.

Choose a harder stone

Driveways, parking, commercial entrances, pool decks

For paving we'd point you to Piedra Pinoy or cobblestone pavers.

08Before you order

What to know before you order

Adobe is soft rock, and it absorbs water. We'd like you to hear that from us first.

Median strength
3.5 MPaMetro Manila core tests
Middle half of samples
2.5 to 5.1 MPa392 intact cores
Dry density
~1,700 kg/m316.8 kN/m3 average
On the wall
~32 kg/sqm3/4 inch, dry

Core tests for the Metro Manila Subway classified the rock around the tunnel as soft rock. A 2024 study of 392 intact cores from the same formation put the median compressive strength at about 3.5 MPa.

Edges chip.

Cut corners are fragile in transit and handling, and thin tiles more so. Order 5 to 10% over your measured area.

It absorbs water.

Seal it when it's new, with a breathable sealer. See the maintenance notes below.

Shade and damp grow moss.

A porous stone in a tropical climate will do that. Sun-facing walls stay clean for years, and shaded ones need more care.

Adobe has lasted centuries on Manila's oldest walls. It does that with upkeep, so plan the maintenance from day 1.

09Upkeep

Sealing and maintenance

Seal before grouting.

Unsealed adobe pulls grout pigment into the face.

Use a breathable penetrating sealer.

Silicate or siloxane based. Film-forming acrylics trap moisture behind the stone.

Re-seal every 2 to 3 years outdoors.

Interior walls go much longer.

Clean with water and a soft brush.

Avoid pressure washing and acid.

Moss and algae.

A dilute bleach solution and a stiff brush, then re-seal.

10Laying it

Installation

We're supply only on adobe, so here's what to hand your contractor.

Check the wall can carry it.

At 3/4 inch, adobe adds about 32 kg per sqm. CHB and concrete walls are fine. On drywall or lightweight partitions, get the substrate checked first.

Use a stone-rated tile adhesive.

Plain cement mortar on a smooth wall is how cladding comes loose. Use an exterior-rated product outdoors.

Dampen the tile back before setting.

Adobe is thirsty and can pull water out of the adhesive before it cures.

Dry-lay a course first.

Natural stone varies, and it's easier to sort on the ground than on the wall.

Cut wet.

Use a diamond blade. Dry cutting makes dust and chipped edges.

Leave 5 to 10 mm joints.

Tight joints fight the natural edge variation.

11Origin

Where it comes from

Our adobe is quarried in Bulacan and Rizal.

Supply can stop without warning. Bulacan authorities have raided illegal volcanic tuff quarries in recent years, including Santa Maria in 2022 and San Ildefonso in 2024.

Why that matters to you

A stopped quarry stops your material, and matching a new quarry's colour to a half-finished wall is hard. For any project, order the full quantity from one batch.

Standard paperwork: Sales Invoice, Official Receipt, and Delivery Receipt.

12Compared

Adobe compared to the alternatives

Porcelain adobe-look tile.

Porcelain absorbs less water and takes traffic, so it suits floors. Adobe has depth and variation that a printed tile repeats.

Piedra Pinoy.

Piedra Pinoy is harder and comes in larger formats, so it's the better pick for paving. Adobe is warmer in colour and suited to walls.

Vigan brick.

Both read as heritage. Vigan is fired terracotta in reds and antique white. Adobe is gray to brown-gray stone. They can share a wall if the design is deliberate.

Breeze blocks.

Breeze blocks let air and light through a wall. Adobe faces a solid one. Many perimeter walls use both.

15FAQ

Procurement FAQ

How much do adobe stone tiles cost in the Philippines?

Ours run from ₱60 to ₱420 per piece depending on format, VAT-exclusive. Per square meter of wall that is about ₱2,333 for most formats, ₱2,444 for 15 x 30 cm, and ₱3,000 for 10 x 20 cm. Freight is quoted separately.

How many adobe tiles do I need per square meter?

Between 5.56 pieces (30 x 60 cm) and 50 pieces (10 x 20 cm) at nominal size. Multiply by your wall area and add 5 to 10% for cuts and breakage.

How thick are adobe tiles?

3/4 inch (about 19 mm) is the standard machine cut. Thicker cuts are quoted on request.

How much does adobe cladding weigh?

About 32 kg per sqm at 3/4 inch, dry, based on a dry density of roughly 1,700 kg per cubic meter. A 30 x 60 cm tile weighs about 5.8 kg dry. Wet stone weighs more.

Is Philippine adobe the same as adobe mudbrick?

They're different materials that share a name. Adobe mudbrick is sun-dried earth. Philippine adobe is volcanic tuff, a quarried stone.

Can I use adobe tiles on the floor?

We supply it mainly for walls. It's soft and porous, so for driveways, pool decks, and busy floors we recommend Piedra Pinoy or cobblestone pavers.

Does adobe need sealing?

Outdoors, yes. Use a breathable penetrating sealer before grouting and re-seal every 2 to 3 years.

Will it grow moss?

In deep shade with constant moisture, yes. Sealing slows it, and a dilute bleach solution removes it.

What colours are available?

Natural gray and brown gray. Shade varies by batch, so order one project at one time.

Where does your adobe come from?

Bulacan and Rizal.

Do you install?

We're supply only on adobe. Your contractor's mason can lay it using the installation notes on this page.

Do you deliver outside Luzon?

Yes, by partnered freight quoted per load. Adobe is heavy, so freight is a real line item on long hauls.
